Review of 2nd Shoot

The shoot was much more organised and prepared for as this shoot had a new actress acting. Instead of using my sister i decided to use Kirstie Houghton (AKA Girlfriend) because my sister was heading back to university, therefore i decided to switch the character role so that Kirstie was more reliable to use as an actor as i couldn't rely on my sister for a reshoot. The shoot went much more smoother and all the shots were being produced after a few hours i have lots of nice shots and i am happy with what i have produced. Looking back at the shots i knew and had a picture in my mind which i wanted them to pan out for my sequence. Therefore after this second shoot i then began to edit a first drafted piece of coursework.

Saw 5-Analysis

Even though I hate horrors, I did decided to analyse another opening, this opening was Saw 5. It begin with promoting Its Production company and name of the company producing. The name is called twisted pictures and when showing this title it gives the audience a feeling of what is to come as the name get twisted in barb wire and this certainly gives the feeling for the film

Organisation is the key....I think?

I decided to try and be organised, so i made a shooting schedule to keep up to date on shoots i had to do, filling in stuff like who was present, what day and also the time. I think it has helped me review my shoots and helped me keep them fresh in my mind ..... :)

Shooting Schedule

This is my shooting schedule that i used to log in the days i filmed, with a brief outcome, people present, people acted and timings of the shoot.

Key Ingredients of a Horror Opening

When making an opening of a horror film you need certain aspects to make the sequence successful, with a horror you need to give the audience enough to keep intrigued but not too much to give away the story. When following the rules of a horror, it is the girl that always get killed and the girl is always made out to be the sterotypical blond girl that will always get killed... Another so called rule is that in the opening their is normally a killing or an intention or danger and this is because it then gives the audience a taster of what is to come. A final ingredient for a horror is that people that drink alcohol, or have underage sex will be killed as in horror film the rebellious people are the ones who suffer....... With these ingredients, a horror film is always produced, Although they may be sometimes change the order in which they use the ingredients, as long as it is sucessful........ From doing my research it has gave me lots.....

Ratings- What are they and why do they matter?

Rating are very important to the Film industry as they are good to split the films up into certain groups in so that these groups and films are targeted to the right audience. For example Toy Story would not be an enjoyable film a 15 year old boy, who would prefer a James Bond, Casino Royale. The rating system is also a good guide to help you know what kind of film it is without watching.
The Rating system are as follows into why these rating are given due to what film:

U Rating- It is a universal film suitable for children four years and older. This films are looked at for the primary school children and so that it enable them to be able to watch films with U rating alone.

PG Rating- It is for a little bit of an older group aimed for Eight year olds but choice of an adult present when watching as scenes may not be as pleasant as others. Sensitive children may need an adult present.

12 Rating and 12 A Rating- Both are identical but with a 12 A the person watching younger then 12 will need to be accompanied by an adult as scenes may be to sensitive for a younger viewer. Scenes from these films may be seen as too much for children advising parents to be aware.

15 Rating- No one younger then 15 must not watch it, these films introduce the adult humour and in some cases, horror films may show violence and horrible scenes which may affect the viewing for this older audience.

18 Rating- No one younger may not watch these films, these will contain Violence, Adult humour, Sexual Scenes, in any case anything could be shown pending on the type of the film.

Halloween- Analysis

The opening of Halloween is very well shot and from it i got ideas for my own title sequence.
The Sequence begins with a point of view shot of someone walking to the front door door of a house. When approaching close to the door there is glimpses of people in the house, therefore this is setting the opening up to make you wonder who is watching these people and what is going to happen in the next scenes. The person then begins to go round the side of the house and when looking through this point of view, the audience see a pumkin through the mise en scene indicating to the audience it is Halloween (festive time). This also because of this festive time it shows that nearly all of horror films happen at a festive time. This person goes back to the front of the house and looks at the window, when the person looks they see the light goes out, and this is an indication that it is time to make a move. At this point the music has a sudden classing notes to make the audience jump and from this it picks up pace whilt this person is trying to get in to the house. A piano accompanying the other sounds create suspense for the audience, the piano is like the signature of this person as whenever something is going to happen then the piano will begin. Once getting in the person turns the light on, the person then grabs a knife from a draw and with this shot we see the first sight of this someones body therefore it builds suspence for the audience, it also creates a sense of worry and anxiety as grabbing a knife it indicates that there is going to be a death. the person begins to walk out of the brightly lit kitchen into a dark lit room indicating something is going to happen as he is going away from the nice safe lit place of the kitchen. These point of views through this persons eyes is showing us the setting where it is going to take place therefore when looking round the house, it is not only for the person to look but also to show the audience. The person then begins to go up the stairs but sees one of the teens,he then peeks round the corner and this indicating to the audience he should'nt be there and does not want to be seen creating suspense. The Boy goes down the stairs and leaves the Girl in the house alone. This gives indication to the audience that this person who is still unseen looking around the person then sees a mask and puts it on , this creating suspence that no one will know who is is because his face is hidden and also creates great mise on scene as we see the mask being worn through the persons point of view. looking for the girl, the person approches ands then begins to stab her frequently showing the weapon the person uses. At this point the music is very strong and with a strong bass it emphasises the mise en scene. It also is as much important aswell as the mise en scene to create the tension build suspense and creatre a sense of worry into the audience and preparing them for more to come into the film itself. With the music still being very strong the person or the killer now begins to leave the house very hastily before being caught, until he walks outside and two people comfront him and take off his mask, at this moment it creates confusion for the audience as we know the character who is the killers name, where he lives, that he is very ypoung and wondering why he would do this. This indicates that this opening gives the audience only a few but enough infomation and with all these questions building within all of the audience wondering what is going to happen giving a platform for the audience to want to watch it again to understand more or watching the whole film. overall i believe this opening is great opening and well directed, also the mise en scene with the music creates all of the suspense, tension and without one another it would not be as sucessful as it has turned out.

Review of my First Shoot

The first shoot was very successful i believe as it gave me a chance to test shoot my ideas and abled me to see the end product of how it would look on the big screen, i also gave me more ideas to try and different angles to perfect the shots i wanted. in the shoot i used my sister as the actress, she played a big role when it came to getting the performance spot on or i had in my mind that the film would not of been a success. overall for a first shoot i believe it was very successful and worked well.

1st Shoot- EVER! but it went really good...

:) ... I've shot for the first time... i believe the filiming went well. I decided to use my sister for my actress as she was availiable to use to film and because of her free time we had a long time to get a various amount of shots completed. We filmed lots of shots again and again and finally we finished and ended up with half and hour of footage to edit into 2 minutes, so i knew io had alot of work ahead.. i just hope these shots are enough to use for my sequence.....

Reseach on Horror sequences

I began to look and look into opening of horror title sequences, i first looked at a remake title sequence of Saw which involved no people but used the colour red as a sign of blood and danger therefore i thought that i would need the colour red to give my horror film the useable theme of a horror which i wanted in order for my film to fit in with all the horror films. From saw i realised i wanted the font to be which so the red font was inspired by the use of red in the remake opening of Saw, it just sets the scene for the audience and this is what i want to achieve.
I then look at certain films such as Halloween and Nightmare on elm street and this showed that the typical horror film is at a seasonal time therefore this inspired me to make my film at Christmas. i wanted to follow the rules of the horror and use a seasonal time therefore these two films inspired my thought of Christmas. I also got the idea of giving my opening the feel that gives the audience just enough to be intrigued of what will happen next and give them bring up questions which they want to be answered.
The music i chose was whittled down to a few after trying out different soundtracks to fit my satisfaction and to most importantly fit into my opening sequence. I didn't want no talking in my opening as i didn't want to give any think away and also i wanted to let the shots do the talking, show the power of music and how the right music can draw any type of audience into the sequence. This was inspired by the halloween because although there was talking, the music controlled the emotions of the audience and created the tension for the scene and without it the sequence would not be as successful. Through my research i planned in depth what i wanted to achieve with my opening title sequence, i knew the structure based on inspiration and therefore from this, i then planned and storey boarded my sequence.

Organise, Organise, Organise

.... The day before my first shoot and my actor in unavailiable for the shoot... i'm trying to arrange a replacement but I'm thinking of tweaking my sequence for the best as i think a girl instead of a boy may make the sequence more of a success.... anyway other then that I'm ready to shoot jus waiting till tomorrow to begin :)................................

Target Audience

When thinking about my Sequence and also looking at other Horror films, they all show a similar target audience. The target Audience that these films focus on is between the ages of Teens of the age of 15 and onwards, i believe the film watched would be decided on what the person choosing a film would like. In this case for a Horror i believe an older age would be preferred to films likes this as the Horrific scenes of blood and head turning moments would be to much for the younger group of 14 years and younger. Films such as all of the Saw films, Scream, Jaws are all meant to make you scared, or feel it is horrific and this is one of the main aims of a horror film.

When Analysing my film and the target audience i believe mine to be quite bloody, but not head turning for the audience. I have rated it as a 18 because i feel that the story within the Film is very hard hitting and will have scenes filled with violence, squeamish, and lots of blood. On the other hand i believe my sequence could appeal to the Older teenagers as it has characters of the same age appearing in it....
Without a target audience i believe that the film could not be successful as if you have not got a audience aimed for it then you can not guarantee a big group will enjoy it..

Logline- SCROOGE

Logline-
The joyous families prepare for another happy, exciting Christmas, but for one, is a contrast to everyone. Thriving on killing the happiness of Christmas is o so easy; killing the people to prevent this happiness is also a lingering thought in the mind. The killing of Christmas is upon us. The contrastingly opposite to Santa who is kind, caring, delightful. This Scrooge makes his pleasure through the more killings, then presents, a new knife rather then the new phone. This Scrooge certainly wont be giving out presents this year..

Location Shots

These are my location shots showing where my opening to my sequence will take place. It shows that i' going to use my house as the location as we could film at any time. I used the Front room, Kitchen, and also out side of the House, back and front.

What Audience i need to focus on?

Today i'm trying to think about what sort of audience i need for my sequence. I wanted to think because i didn't want it to be aimed at the wrong audience then making it not as a success. I was thinking of a 15 rating but then i would be annoyed for not being able to include more violence if i chose it, i think i would just be annoyed with being restricted of what i could include therefore it is favouring me to give a rating of 18 instead but i'm still not decided ........:)

The Idea

The idea is to create a Christmas Horror. I want my sequence to draw in the audience, make the audience think about stuff happening in the short amount of time. I want to base it on a season, this is where the idea of Christmas came from. All horror are around a season and from i recall over the last few Years i ain't heard of horrors as much at Christmas and this gave me the thought of doing it.

When thinking of the name i thought of many to link it to The festive season, this then made me think of the horrible old grumpy interpreted by many, Scrooge. This gave me so many ideas to produce my sequence and using this it gives everyone and the sequence a nice sound to it and this is my idea of how i would like it to unravel..

Notes for my sequence

These are my notes i used when thinking about the idea and want i wanted to create and make. All of my notes here show the type of shots i wanted. I especially wanted to put enough choice when i was preparing as i had lots of shot types and angles to try.

Kyle Cooper

Kyle Cooper is the most successful modern designer of Motion picture title sequences. Cooper has designed sequences for films such as the 1995 film Seven Starring Morgan Freeman and Leonardo Dicaprio, Spider Man 2, Godzilla; Final wars, Superman returns, and many more, most recent being Snake eater.

The opening sequence of "Se7en" runs for around 4 minutes and it is intended to introduce us to the central protagonist, Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), as well as to set the mood for the remainder of the film. It also gives the audience lots of information about him- including what he does for a living and what he's like as a person, not least introducing another main character, Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt). The look of the entire opening scene (and, consequently, the entire film itself), is very rough and raw. This is to keep the tension high and the mood dark, it also links the film with dark ideas such a murder and serial killers. The opening cuts from the distributor's logo straight to Somerset in his apartment, getting ready for work. It shows he is very meticulous and exact- his things are all lined up parallel on his desk in the order in which he picks them up. Continuity editing is used for this scene so all of the audience's attention is focused solely on Somerset- although the edits are fairly fast, to keep both the pace and tension as high as possible. It also keeps the speed of the scene up- he gets ready very quickly, in the very next shot we see him at work straight away.
